Alcohol can have a powerful impact on women’s hormones, even at levels that are often considered “moderate.” Because women generally metabolise alcohol differently than men, its effects on the endocrine system (the network of glands that produce hormones) can be more noticeable and disruptive over time.

One of the main ways alcohol affects hormones is by interfering with the balance between estrogen and progesterone. Regular drinking can increase estrogen levels while reducing progesterone, which may contribute to symptoms like heavier or more painful periods, worsened PMS, breast tenderness, and more intense mood swings. For some women, alcohol can also make menstrual cycles less predictable.

Alcohol also raises cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. While drinking may feel relaxing in the moment, the body treats alcohol as a toxin and works hard to process it. This can trigger a stress response, leading to higher cortisol levels during the night and into the next day. Over time, elevated cortisol can contribute to fatigue, anxiety, poor sleep, and weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

Sleep disruption is another major hormonal effect. Alcohol interferes with deep restorative sleep and REM cycles. When sleep quality declines, hormones that regulate appetite and energy, such as leptin and ghrelin can become imbalanced. This can increase cravings, especially for sugar and carbohydrates, and make it harder for the body to regulate hunger.

Alcohol can also place extra strain on the liver, which plays an important role in processing and clearing excess hormones from the body. When the liver is busy metabolising alcohol, it becomes less efficient at regulating hormone levels, which can contribute to hormonal imbalance.

For many women, reducing or eliminating alcohol leads to improvements in sleep, mood stability, skin health, and menstrual symptoms. Hormones are highly responsive, and even small lifestyle changes can help the body return to a healthier balance.
