Physical signs of excessive alcohol consumption often develop gradually, making them easy to overlook at first. One of the most common early indicators is frequent hangovers. Regular headaches, nausea, dehydration, and fatigue after drinking suggest the body is struggling to recover. Over time, this can become a persistent cycle that affects daily functioning.
Another noticeable sign is tremors or shaking, particularly in the hands. This can happen when alcohol levels drop in the body and may indicate growing dependence. Sleep disturbances are also common. While alcohol may initially help with falling asleep, it disrupts deeper sleep stages, leading to poor-quality rest and ongoing tiredness.
Digestive problems are another physical warning sign. Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, which can result in nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, or diarrhea. Long-term irritation can lead to more serious gastrointestinal issues. Changes in weight may also occur. Alcohol is high in calories, so some people gain weight, while others may lose weight due to poor nutrition or reduced appetite.
Skin changes can provide visible clues. Flushed skin, dryness, or broken capillaries, especially around the nose and cheeks are often linked to heavy drinking. In more severe cases, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) can develop, signalling potential liver damage.
Finally, an increased tolerance to alcohol is a key physical sign. Needing more alcohol to achieve the same effects means the body has adapted, which can lead to higher consumption and greater health risks.
Taken together, these signs highlight how alcohol can impact multiple systems in the body. Recognizing them early can help prevent more serious long-term damage.
